What is Collagen Therapy?

Collagen Therapy is an effective non-ablative procedure using a medical needling roller to help reduce wrinkles, lines, skin crepiness, acne scarring and stretch marks. This technique aids in skin rejuvenation without damaging the top layer of your skin (the epidermis), your sole protection from the environment. The treatment usually includes 6 in-clinic sessions, 2 weeks apart and a home car regiment.

How does skin needling work?

Rejuvenation by skin needling utilizes and enhances the body’s own natural response to healing. When hundreds of tiny needles stimulate through the dermis using a roller, the inflammatory healing mechanism is triggered and starts the production of new collagen and elastin. These molecules are laid down in the dermis just below the bottom layer of the epidermis and are responsible for the youthful look and texture of young skin.

Why must I use Vitamin A and C during the treatments?

To achieve youthful skin, one needs the skin to be functionally as healthy as possible. Most patients coming for treatment have photo-aging and this needs to be addressed before proceeding with Collagen Therapy. Damage of dermal tissue can be a result of ultraviolet rays and chronic deficiency of vitamin A, nutrition, smoking and many other causes. The first step toward skin health is to topically replace photosensitive vitamin A and the other antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Vitamin A is essential for the normal physiology of skin and yet it is destroyed by exposure to light so that it is prevented from preserving healthy young skin. Vitamin A stimulates cell growth, the release of growth factors, and the production of healthy new collagen in parallel with the growth factors released by Collagen Therapy. Vitamin C is also important for collagen formation. Both of these vitamins need to be replaced every day so that the natural protection and repair of DNA can be maintained. Adequate nourishment of the skin with vitamin A and C along with antioxidants will ensure that the metabolic processes for collagen production are maximized with your Collagen Therapy treatments.

Why is home care an important part of the treatment?

A home care roller is recommended to help with the penetration of Vitamin A and C. The tiny micro needles puncture the top layer of the epidermis, which is the main obstruction to penetration of active ingredients. Once this layer has been breached, the active ingredients in the skin care products can reach into the depths of the skin more effectively than by simply applying the products topically. The higher the levels of vitamin A and vitamin C that can penetrate into the lower layers of the epidermis, the more collagen can be made, therefore allowing natural collagenesis to occur. That is why Vitamin A and Vitamin C creams are a critical component to Collagen Therapy treatments.

Who should consider Collagen Therapy?

Patients who are looking to restore skin elasticity and tightness, improve fine lines and wrinkles as well as texture and scarring issues from acne, injury, surgery, stretch marks and burns. Collagen Therapy can be done on most areas of the body, such as face, arms, tummy, and thighs.

Who cannot participate in Collagen Therapy?

Clients who: currently have skin cancers, any active skin infection, active acne or herpes infections in the treatment area or impetigo lesions anywhere on the body; patients on any anticoagulant therapy such as warfarin, heparin, and other oral anticoagulants; allergy to local anesthetic agents; patients who are immune compromised or have poor healing due to other medical condition. Lastly, patients with an extremely rare but severe form of keloid scarring are also best refraining from this treatment.  These are all addressed during your consultation with Dr. Matta.

How many treatments do I need?

That depends on the condition of the skin, scars or skin damage, as well as the size of the area being treated. A course of 1 to 3 treatments for skin rejuvenation is recommended and a course of up to 6 treatments for deep pitted scars. Most treatments take from 20-40 minutes and are done 2-4 weeks apart. The treatment area must be prepared with Vitamin A and C a minimum of two weeks prior to the first Collagen Therapy treatment. In cases where the skin is very thick, a course of peels prior to your first treatment may be recommended. Also, throughout the treatment program, you are required to follow a home care regiment that includes product and rolling the skin with a home care roller.

Is there any downtime to Collagen Therapy treatments?

Patients will experience mild sensitivity, inflammation and redness after treatment, which are signs that the fine micro points have penetrated the epidermis. The perforated stratum corneum will close within minutes and the sensitivity and redness should abate within 2 to 5 hours. Although rare, some bruising may occur.

How do I start Collagen Therapy?

As with any treatment at Dr. Matta Cosmetic and Laser Clinic, it is always best to start with a general consultation. Dr. Matta along with his trained staff will assist you in understanding your needs and priorities, and provide you with a comprehensive plan of action that best meets your needs and helps achieve your goals.

Will I still benefit from the home care treatment without the in office Roll CIT procedure?

The best results for collagen stimulation will come from the in office procedures in combination with the home care treatment. The home care treatment does not replace in office procedures. For those who do not choose the in office procedure, the home care treatment is still beneficial for uneven skin tone and texture. The in office Collagen Therapy helps restore the skin to its youthful thickness and the home care treatment helps to maintain the benefit.

Micro-needling with the Environ® Medical Roll-CIT® is a recent addition to the Environ® Roll-CIT® range of products and represents the result of ongoing innovation at the Environ® laboratories in South Africa. The micro-needling procedure using the Environ® suite of products is a revolutionary approach to anti-ageing through stimulating the body’s own natural collagen production processes. This procedure both facilitates and stimulates the skin’s natural repair and growth processes without causing any scarring or permanent damage to the skin and significantly improves skin tone, texture and impurities.

Vitamins A and C are critical to Collagen Therapy. The tiny micro needles of the roller puncture the top level of the epidermis, which is the main obstacle to penetration of active ingredients. This process is proven to be more effective than simply applying the products topically.

The Environ® Medical Roll-CIT® procedure consists of multiple sessions depending on the condition of the skin, scars or skin damage as well as the size of the area being treated. Ranging from a recommended course of 1 to 3 treatments for skin rejuvenation, or to up to 6 treatments for deep pitted scars. Most treatments take less than 45 minutes and are done 2-4 weeks apart. The treatment area must be prepared with Vitamin A and C a minimum of two weeks prior to the first Collagen Therapy treatment. The entire Collagen Therapy procedure consists of these in-clinic sessions, as well as a home care treatment, including product and a home roller.
