What is Laser Skin Rejuvenation/Photofacials?
Dr. Matta uses the Palomar Medilux to reduce pigmented lesions (sun spots or age spots), vascular lesions (broken blood vessels, rosacea, spider veins and cherry hemangiomas), melasma (dark spots on the face usually in response to UV light and pregnancy) and improve overall skin texture and body. It is also useful to reduce the appearance of scars.

What areas can be treated?
Although most common for the face, chest and hands, rejuvenation can be done anywhere on the body.

What should I expect after treatment?
Pigmented (dark) lesions will darken after treatment then fade away after about 10-14 days.  Vessels generally go grey immediately after treatment and then fade over the next couple of weeks.

How many sessions will I need?
Most people will notice an improvement from even one session, but it is recommended to complete a course of 3-5 sessions over  a period of a few months.

What are the risks?
As with any laser procedure, there is a small chance of first degree burn or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation after treatment.  The risks are minimized by preparing properly and avoiding sun tanning for 6 weeks prior to treatment.  Click here for more details.

What to do before Laser Skin Rejuvenation
Wax or shave any hair in the area you want treated to reduce discomfort.

Avoid using exfoliant creams (Retin-A and alpha hydroxyl creams) for 1 weeks prior to treatment.

Avoid tanning, including self-tanning lotions and significant sun exposure, for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. If you must be in the sun we suggest a total sun block (SPF 45 or higher). Your skin should be as light as possible before treatment.

On the day of your treatment do not apply any type of body lotion, oils, creams or perfumes. Keep the skin clean and free of any products. Only Vivier™ Vitamin C Serum is acceptable.

What to do after Laser Skin Rejuvenation
You will probably notice a mild heat-like sensation. This usually resolves within 2-72 hours of treatment. Mild swelling and/or redness rarely accompany this treatment, but if it occurs then it should resolve in 2-3 days.

Apply cool compresses or ice immediately after the treatment for 15 minutes every 2-4 hours to reduce any redness and provide comfort. A steroid cream or aloe gel may also be used.

Treated lesions may initially appear raised and/or darker with a reddened border. Apply ice or cool compresses for 10-15 minutes every hour for 4 hours or as needed. These lesions will gradually turn darker over the next day or two, scab and flake off by the second or third week.

Bathe or shower as usual. Treated areas may be temperature sensitive for a day or so, cool showers will offer relief.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing and use of exfoliants, scrub brushes and loofa sponges until the treatment area has returned to its pre-treatment condition.

If blisters, scabs or irritation occurs, apply an antibiotic ointment (polysporin) to the area twice a day until healed.  Do not pick, scratch or remove any scabs should they occur. Until redness has completely resolved, avoid applying cosmetics on or near the treated areas. Avoid hot tubs and Jacuzzis and avoid activities that cause excessive sweating.

Avoid sun exposure to treated areas.  Apply sunscreen of SPF 45 or more daily to sun-exposed skin between treatments, and 4-6 weeks after treatment.

If you have been given a skin care cream program resume using it after 5 days at which time you may apply makeup as desired.

Many men and women ask me if there’s a way to improve loose or sagging skin without surgery. Thankfully we now have a very effective non-surgical approach to help treat the lower face, cellulite, tummies and other areas of the body.

The Tripollar Maximus is an advanced non-invasive body and facial shaping system now available. This new device combines TriLipo Radiofrequency and TriLipo Dynamic Muscle Activation to optimize localized fat reduction and skin tightening. The Maximus has been clinically proven to remove unwanted fat for body contouring, tighten skin, reduce cellulite and stretch marks and lift and tone underlying muscle. Patients see a benefit immediately after the first treatment and it continues to improve with further treatments. Most patients undergo a series of 6-8 weekly sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes, with quarterly maintenance.

The process itself is quite pleasant and feels like a warm massage. There is no down time, and patients can return to normal activity immediately after treatment. With the Maximus we are able to treat small delicate areas around the eyes and mouth; broader areas of the face, neck and hands; and the large applicator targets large body areas such as thighs, buttocks and abdomen.

How does it work?

The Maximus works on all three different layers of concern. It utilizes the Dynamic Muscle Activation to tighten the underlying muscle, while at the same time enhancing local fat breakdown in the middle layer.

The dermis is another crucial part of the skin because it is here that cells create collagen and elastin, two proteins that make up the structural component of the skin. As we age, collagen quality and quantity go down, which is why skin starts to sag and deteriorate. It is here that the TriLipo RF stimulates new collagen and elastin production, resulting in tighter skin immediately with continued improvement over the year.

Most patients try to replace collagen through topical creams, but this is ineffective because collagen cannot penetrate through the skin. When you combine the RF energy with Vitamin C serums and other skin care products, collagen production is enhanced even more. The RF energy heats the dermal skin layer, causing collagen fibers to contract. This contraction results in immediate skin tightening and improved skin texture.

When you combine the benefits of wrinkle treatment and hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane with the Maximus, you can achieve a “non-surgical facelift”. This results in filling and lifting of deflated cheeks, elimination of active wrinkles and reduction of marionette lines and jowls.

While there is no non surgical cosmetic procedure that will result in actual weight loss, the Maximus will reduce body circumference and contribute to improved contours. This may provide men and women with a non surgical option to liposuction, depending on the extent of their condition.

On the body, the Maximus can target

1. “Mummy tummy”, tightening the loose skin that happens after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Previous treatments for mummy tummy included surgery to remove the excess skin and fat but resulted in a long noticeable scar. For those patients that don’t want a scar or surgical intervention, the Maximus provides a viable option.

2. Cellulite which affects up to 80% of women; commonly on the buttock and thighs. A cure would be considered the holy grail of cosmetic procedures. There is no ideal treatment to permanently eliminate cellulite but the Maximus provides us with one of the best treatment options available. By providing Dynamic Muscle Activation it mirrors the effect of endermology and the simultaneous action of the RF energy breaks down the fat that contributes to the dimpling seen in cellulite. The Maximus can provide a significant immediate improvement in cellulite. Since cellulite is a chronic condition, best results require ongoing treatment.

3. Thighs and buttocks. Many women would like to tighten their thighs for appearance or to fit better in clothing. Whatever your reason, the Maximus can help reduce body measurements, improve contours and lift treated areas.
